Whey in comparison: concentrate, isolate or clear whey?

You stand in front of the protein shelf and see the same whey protein three times: as a concentrate, as an isolate and, for a few years now, as clear whey. All three come from the same raw material and differ primarily in how far they have been filtered. We'll take a moment to sort out what this means for protein content, milk sugar, consistency and price - so that in the end you know which variant suits you.
Where whey even comes from
Whey is produced during cheese production. The proteins are separated from it using membrane filtration and then spray-dried - this is how a review article by Seema Patel describes it in the Journal of Food Science and Technology (2015). The use of raw materials is considerable: the consumer advice center states that around 200 liters of milk are required for one kilogram of whey protein.
How often and how finely filtering is carried out determines the end product: concentrate goes through the filtration less consistently and therefore still contains fat and lactose, isolate is purified more intensively. And if you're wondering whether whey can fundamentally do more than other protein sources: Quarks argues that whey protein is converted slightly better in the body than other protein sources because of its higher biological value, but that this difference is of little relevance to most people.
Whey concentrate: the standard on the shelf
According to consumer advice centers, whey concentrate has a protein content of 70 to 80 percent. The rest is made up of milk sugar, fat and minerals - exactly the ingredients that give your shake its creamy, milky consistency. Because the preparation involves fewer steps, the price per serving is typically lowest in this group; Concentrates are also often offered in large containers.
This is an inconspicuous variant for everyday training: a powder that you stir into milk or water, drink cold and which has no surprises in the nutritional table.

Isolate goes through additional filtration steps. The consumer advice center states that whey isolate has a protein content of 90 to 95 percent with a correspondingly lower lactose and fat content; Patel (2015) also puts isolate at around 90 percent protein and describes the route via ultrafiltration, evaporation and spray drying.
In practical terms, this means: more protein per 100 grams of powder and fewer accompanying substances. If you want to keep milk sugar low in your diet, look at the nutritional table instead of the front of the pack - according to the consumer advice center, a food can only be labeled as "lactose-free" if it contains less than 0.1 grams of lactose per 100 grams, and not every isolate automatically reaches this threshold. The effort involved in purification is reflected in the price, which is higher than that of concentrates.

Clear Whey is not a fourth protein source, but rather an isolate-based processing variant. Men's Health describes in an article from July 2025 that pure whey protein isolate with around 95 percent protein is processed using microfiltration - for example using the cross-flow process - so that lactose and fat are greatly reduced and the powder dissolves clearly. According to this illustration, a clear, juice-like liquid ends up in the shaker instead of a milkshake, and the taste is usually fruity instead of milky. The article typically mentions 30 grams of powder in 500 milliliters of cold water as a preparation.
The appeal lies less in the nutritional table than in the feeling of drinking. If you find yourself craving something cold and clear post-workout in the height of summer rather than a creamy shake, that's a perfectly legitimate reason—a preference, not a nutritional necessity. Men's Health classifies this accordingly: For amateur athletes, the nutritional differences between clear whey and classic whey do not play a decisive role; the decisive factor is the taste preferences. In terms of price, the same source places Clear Whey above the classic whey concentrate.

Which variant suits you?
- You consume regularly and calculate the price per portion: Concentrate in large containers. The accompanying substances are hardly significant for normal portion sizes.
- You want to keep milk sugar and fat low and clear nutritional values: Isolate. A look at the whey isolate selection shows you how different the contents are per product.
- You don't like a milky consistency or you train a lot in the heat: Clear Whey. Useful as a supplement if you simply don't drink a creamy shake in your everyday life.

How much protein actually needs to come together
To be honest, choosing the whey variant is only the second step. The first is your total intake for the day. The German Nutrition Society cites 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day as a reference value for adults aged 19 to under 65, and 1.0 grams for those aged 65 and over. If you exercise for more than five hours per week, the consumer advice center gives a range of 1.2 to 2.0 grams per kilogram and lists the maximum amounts as 1.7 grams for strength sports and 1.6 grams for endurance sports.
A meta-analysis by Morton and colleagues in the British Journal of Sports Medicine (2018) examined where the additional benefit ends: In the evaluation of 49 studies with 1,863 participants, a total intake above 1.62 grams per kilogram per day did not result in any further gains in fat-free mass achieved through strength training. Quarks also points out that the EFSA sees no evidence of risks from an intake of up to around 1.6 grams per kilogram per day for healthy, physically active people and an overall balanced diet.
A calculation example from the consumer advice center makes the magnitude tangible: A person weighing 75 kilograms who eats 3,500 kilocalories a day and gets 15 percent of their energy as protein comes to around 131 grams of protein - around 1.7 grams per kilogram, which is already at the upper end. The conclusion there is correspondingly clear: an increase in protein-enriched foods is unnecessary if the normal diet already covers the needs.
This leaves protein powder with an honest role: It is a tool if you cannot reliably reach your target amount through fixed meals or need a quick portion on the go. If you reach them anyway, you can do without it. A market check by Food Clarity from 2022 underlines this from a price perspective: of 57 protein products compared, 49 were more expensive than the respective comparison product without protein advertising, and one in five cost more than twice as much. Legally, the following applies to labeling: According to Regulation (EU) No. 432/2012, the statement that protein contributes to the increase and maintenance of muscle mass can be used - according to Food Clarity, the condition is that at least 12 percent of the calorific value of a food comes from protein. Is the extra charge for isolate worth it?
Especially if you want to keep milk sugar or fat low for specific reasons or if your calorie budget is tight. For the pure amount of protein, the difference is manageable: 70 to 80 percent compared to 90 to 95 percent according to the consumer advice center means a difference of a few grams for normal portion sizes - you can also compensate for this by changing the portion size.
Is clear whey more nutritious than classic whey?
No. According to Men's Health, Clear Whey is based on whey protein isolate, so it has a similar profile to other isolates. The difference lies in the processing and therefore in the consistency and taste, not in an additional nutritional component.
Does the time of taking it matter?

What should you look for in the label?
On the protein content per 100 grams of powder, the specified serving size and the carbohydrate content, which in whey products predominantly consists of lactose. Food Clarity points out that protein information is sometimes based on the entire package and therefore appears larger than it is per serving.
