Whey is becoming more expensive: calculate the price per serving and save by stocking up

You hesitated when ordering your whey? It's not my imagination: Whey protein has recently become significantly more expensive - not felt, but measurable. If you regularly mix shakes, the question arises as to how you can keep the additional costs under control. You have three levers for this: consistently compare the price per portion instead of the package price, go for larger containers and stock up systematically.

What's currently happening in the whey market

Men's Health reported in June 2026 that prices for whey protein have risen by more than 50 percent since the beginning of the year. The price comparison portal ProteinDB evaluated the development over ten months: According to this, the average price per kilo for whey concentrate rose from 23.90 to 33.95 euros between July 2025 and May 2026 - an increase of 42 percent. Isolate and multi-component blends rose in price by 25 and 28 percent respectively over the same period.

Segment Kilo price July 2025 Kilo price May 2026 Change
Whey concentrate (WPC) 23.90 € €33.95 +42%
Multi-component blend 32.84 € 42.11 € +28%
Whey Isolate (WPI) 39.90 € 49.99 € +25%

Median prices per kilogram according to ProteinDB analysis (May 2026). Striking: the concentrate in particular, previously the variant with the lowest price per kilo, has increased the most in percentage terms.

The causes in brief

  • Limited supply: Whey protein is created as a byproduct of cheese making. According to consumer advice centers, there are around 200 liters of milk in one kilogram of whey protein - so the available amount cannot be expanded arbitrarily.
  • Demand goes far beyond the fitness niche: Protein pudding, protein yoghurt and bars from the supermarket compete for the same raw material as classic powders, according to Men's Health.
  • Higher production costs: Increased milk and energy costs make production more expensive; According to ProteinDB, drying and filtration of whey are energy-intensive.
  • Weather-related failures: ProteinDB also refers to heat periods in important milk regions that have depressed the amount of raw milk.

In short: demand is growing faster than supply. None of these causes should disappear overnight - it's all the more important that you think through your purchasing strategy soberly.

The central key figure: price per portion

The package price alone means little to you, because cans and bags are available in very different sizes - from small sample packs to large containers. Offers can only be compared via the basic price in euros per kilogram or – even more everyday – via the price per portion.

Here's how you calculate, using a freely chosen numerical example: A 2 kilogram container for an assumed 60 euros results in around 66 portions for 30 gram portions (2000 divided by 30). 60 euros divided by 66 portions is around 0.90 euros per shake. A 1 kilogram can for an estimated 35 euros, on the other hand, only comes with around 33 portions and therefore around 1.05 euros per shake. The decisive factor is always the portion size stated on your package.

It's even easier without a calculator: The basic price in euros per kilogram is listed directly next to the price on every product page. This allows you to compare two packs directly.

Why large containers are usually cheaper per portion

The larger the container, the less significant the fixed costs are: can or bag, label, filling, shipping box and handling cost a similar amount per sales unit - no matter how much powder is in it. That's why the price per kilo of large packs is usually lower than that of small cans. And the more raw material prices rise, the more this effect benefits you, because every euro saved per kilogram absorbs part of the increase.

There is an honest objection: A large container is only worth it if you already know the taste and use the powder. For the first test of a new variety, the small pack remains the more sensible choice.

Supply sets: the third lever

In addition to large containers, there is a third way to shop in a planned manner: ready-made supply rations. With us you will find sets that cover your needs for 30, 60, 90, 180 or 365 days - from the compact 30-day supply to the annual ration. If you know your consumption, about one serving per training day, the 90-day supply will cover an entire quarter without you having to reorder in between. The same applies here: The basic price on the product page makes the sets directly comparable to individual packs.

What's important when stocking up

  • Check the best-before date: Before buying larger quantities, take a look at the best before date - you should realistically use up the supply within this period.
  • Store dry and not too warm: Protein powder attracts moisture. A dry, cool closet works better as a kitchen window or bathroom.
  • Seal packs well: Close opened bags tightly and use them first before opening the next pack.
  • Plan consumption realistically: Stockpiling only saves if you actually drink the powder.

Does whey even need to be used?

To be honest, protein powder is not a must. The consumer advice center points out that you can also cover your protein needs with normal foods - one liter of low-fat milk provides 35 grams of protein, 500 grams of low-fat quark almost 68 grams. For those who are active, the same source refers to information from the EFSA, according to which, depending on the training condition and training goal, a daily intake of 1.2 to 2.0 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight is mentioned. For protein in general, claims are permitted in the EU that it contributes to the increase in muscle mass and the maintenance of muscle mass; However, according to consumer advice centers, there is no claim specifically approved for whey. Above all, whey remains a convenient and easily calculable protein source - if you cover your needs through your diet anyway, you can do without it.

Frequently asked questions

Why is whey protein currently so expensive?

Several factors come together: whey is only produced as a by-product of cheese production, at the same time the food industry demands the same raw material for protein pudding, yogurt and bars, and milk and energy costs have risen. Men's Health reports price increases of more than 50 percent since the beginning of 2026.

Are concentrate or isolate more affected?

According to ProteinDB's evaluation, whey concentrate increased by a greater percentage of 42 percent between July 2025 and May 2026 than isolate at 25 percent. In absolute terms, the price per kilo of isolate is still higher.

How do you calculate the price per serving?

Package price divided by the number of servings; The number of portions is determined by dividing the filling quantity by the portion size according to the packaging. As a marked calculation example: 2000 grams result in around 66 portions for 30 gram portions. Our product pages also show the basic price in euros per kilogram - this saves you the hassle of calculating.

Will whey prices fall again?

This cannot be reliably predicted. However, the causes described by Men's Health and ProteinDB - limited whey supply, broad demand, higher production costs - are structural in nature. If you consume regularly, you'll do better with portion price comparisons and planned stockpiling than with impulse purchases.
