What is Lutein?

Lutein and zeaxanthin are orange-yellow carotenoids of plant origin that accumulate in the macula of the human retina, protecting the photoreceptor cells from short-wave light and free radicals.
Scientific studies suggest that an adequate supply of these pigments may reduce the risk of developing age-related macular degeneration and cataracts and influence their progression.
The carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin are found in the retina of the eye and in particularly high concentrations in the macula lutea, which is the structure in the center of the retina with the highest density of photoreceptors, achieving the highest visual acuity.
They are selectively enriched there, and their concentration is significantly higher than in other tissues. They have also been found in the lens.

How important is lutein?
In addition to lutein's effect on eyesight, it can also have a regenerating effect on the eyes. Research suggests that lutein can slow the progression of age-related macular degeneration.

What does the body need zeaxanthin for?
Zeaxanthin, alongside lutein, is enriched in the macula of the eye's retina. They form the macular pigment, which protects against harmful wavelengths of light and free radicals. Lutein and zeaxanthin filter blue light and therefore appear yellow.
