What is Lutein?
Lutein and zeaxanthin are orange-yellow plant-derived carotenoids that accumulate in the human retina's macula and protect the photoreceptor cells from short-wave light and free radicals.
Scientific studies suggest that an adequate supply of these pigments may reduce the risk of developing age-related macular degeneration and cataracts and influence their progression.
The carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin are found in the retina of the eye and in particularly high concentrations in the macula lutea (yellow spot), the structure in the center of the retina with the greatest density of photoreceptors, which achieves the highest visual acuity.
They accumulate there selectively, and their concentration is significantly higher than in other tissues. They have also been found in the lens.
How important is lutein?
In addition to lutein's effect on vision, it can also have a regenerative effect on the eyes. Research suggests that lutein can slow the progression of age-related macular degeneration.
What does the body need zeaxanthin for?
Zeaxanthin, along with lutein, accumulates in the macula, the yellow spot of the eye's retina. They form the macular pigment, which protects against harmful wavelengths of light and free radicals. Lutein and zeaxanthin filter blue light and therefore appear yellow.
