To synthesize proteins necessary for building muscle mass and other tissues, the human body needs 20 different amino acids. However, of these 20, we can produce 11 ourselves from other amino acids if necessary. However, our body cannot synthesize 9 amino acids itself, which is why they are considered essential amino acids, EAAs for short.

It is well known that proteins make a significant contribution to building and maintaining muscle mass. However, proteins are also involved in other functions in our body. For example, enzymes and some hormones are made of protein structures. They are found in the immune system and all tissues of our body and, as part of the blood, are involved in nutrient transport.

Most of us certainly cover the majority of our daily protein needs through a protein-rich diet, which also includes protein powders such as Battle Whey or Battle Vegan. Food proteins usually provide all 20 proteinogenic amino acids and are therefore ideally suited for the majority of amino acids.

Intensive strength training promotes muscle building, that's no secret. The training stimulus causes an increase in muscle protein synthesis, in which amino acids are assembled into new proteins. At the same time, however, training initially also causes an increased breakdown of muscle protein. In order to build muscle mass, the rate of muscle protein synthesis must exceed the rate of muscle protein breakdown.

Research suggests that consuming a quickly digestible protein source, such as whey protein, after training optimizes post-workout anabolic processes by increasing muscle protein synthesis. Further studies have also observed that only the 9 EAAs, but not the remaining 11 proteinogenic amino acids, are able to stimulate muscle protein synthesis.

For this reason, and the fact that we can produce all other relevant amino acids from the 9 EAAs if necessary, bodybuilders have been using EAAs during training for several years to shift the increased protein turnover in their favor during intense workouts. In addition, unlike complete proteins, EAAs do not have to be digested first, but can be absorbed directly from the intestine into the blood. For example, one study observed that amino acid levels peak after just 20 minutes after taking free EAAs.

Most EAA products on the market contain 8 essential amino acids. The reason for this is that even in biology classes today we still learn that 8 instead of 9 amino acids are essential for the body. However, the 9th essential amino acid, histidine, is missing from most products.

This fact goes back to a mistake made by the then American Research Council in 1968. In a paper about the recommended daily amounts of nutrients, histidine was forgotten to be classified as essential, although previous data had already concluded that histidine is one of them.

Due to the confusion among experts, several further studies were carried out with the conclusion that histidine is clearly essential. But to date this has done little to change many people's false assumption that there would be 8 EAAs. The Bulletproof EAAs also did not contain histidine for a long time. But that's over now. What is meant here is the ever-popular “pump effect”. A solution of electrolytes and carbohydrates can increase fluid intake during exercise.

For this reason, we decided to supplement the Bulletproof EAAs with electrolytes. Additional carbohydrates can then be supplemented, for example in the form of cluster dextrin.How should the Bulletproof EAAs be taken?
Studies have observed that taking 9 to 15 grams of EAAs around exercise results in a higher net nitrogen balance. One serving of Bulletproof EAAs (18g) provides 10g of pure EAAs. Depending on body weight and training duration, the dosage should be between 1 and 1.5 servings (18 - 27 g) during training.

Alternatively, meals with lower protein content or poor protein quality can be supplemented with Bulletproof EAAs. Depending on your needs, the amount should be between 1 and 2 portions (18 - 36 g).
